This is a 3 Day 2 Night trip which was a back up to a back up due to some very unfortunate weather with my good friend Aaron. We did a 'Y' out and back and made the most of it including getting treated to an amazing sunset.

Hiking Washington's Coulee Country : Steamboat Rock State Park & Northup Canyon
Просмотров 9616 месяцев назад
An end of the year winter day hike in central Washington. Steamboat Rock State Park and Northup Canyon. Both are beautiful places, they are day use only which is kind of a bummer. The Steamboat Rock State Park Campground was nice and vacant, every time we've driven by in the fall or spring it was always packed to the brim. We enjoyed the solitude near Banks Lake and Grand Coulee.

Another easy in and out during "solitude season". Saw no one except at the trailhead (they were leaving). Probably the last backpacking trip of 2023! Started where we went last time at Pitsburgh landing and hiked in past Kirkwood Ranch toward Sheep Creek Ranch. Originally wanted to do a shuttle but they all were closed for the year or were ridiculously priced.

Great backpacking trip and video Andrew. Some of the best camp fires I have had in a while. I love how you draw me away from my regular backcountry areas. When I go wandering with NorthwestWanderer, I know I am gonna see something new. Till next time, take care and stay safe.

One silver lining of that old forest fire is it reduced the amount of potential spring water flow that is lost due to live tree transpiration.

I was looking at going to the Blue Mnts. the very same weekend for the very same reason. We aborted a weekend in the OLY Park and ended up choosing a weekend in Mt. Great vid. Weather's was pretty wild. I was up at Oregon Butte on the 8th 70° and sunny all day. Even found a few dozen morels in the burn area! I think the mic on your camera setup may be broken or glitching out. There is a constant feedback throughout the video.

when the wind exceeds 30mph it is too much for my little fluffy mic and there was too much wind to be bothered with editing out the high limits lol. as for the white noise, i forgot to turn my auto audio off

I've done the Bailey Range four times but only half on each foray, entering from Dodger Point to Mt. Ferry or exiting that way. The first time I came down the Elwha Snowfinger in '98 I had similar difficulty in the Upper Elwha Basin, but the second time, in '15 with a friend we managed to get through it completely without a hitch. I really enjoyed seeing your alternate route on the north side of Mt. Carrie over to Stephen Peak.

I was the lookout on Black Butte in 1975. So lucky to have that experience! I hiked up from the Salmon River in 2017 for an overnight. The door to the lookout wasn't locked and people, likely hunters, had left a lot of trash inside. I was terribly dismayed and visited the FS office to let them know about the garbage. I'm glad to see that the Forest Service has secured the entry. If only people wouldn't be so thoughtless, the door might not have needed to be sealed shut. I hope someday that the lookout can be restored and rented out. I love that place! As an aside, you wouldn't have stayed inside the lookout if it was as I found it in 2017. Really gross.
